The Problems with Retirement
Having the option to retire can present several challenges.

First, retirement is recognised as a significant career and life change. It can create feelings of uncertainty. It can shift your perception of your place in the world.

Although options include an encore career where you consult or work as a contractor, or a portfolio career where you hold several part-time/Board roles, your level of influence and the nature of your role is likely to be different to what you are accustomed to.

Second, there are recognised stages of retirement, starting with a honeymoon period that is often followed by a level of disenchantment.

What will satisfy your need for purpose, relevance, achievement? What role, if any, will work have in meeting your needs?

Third, you may associate retirement with ageing and treat it as a taboo.

The good news is the stereotype of retirement belongs to past generations, primarily because we now live in an era of greater longevity. The fact is, those in good health may enjoy 20 or more years ahead.

We live in an era in which you can define this stage of your life and career however you choose.
Redefining this life and career stage
Let’s start by replacing the concept of ‘retirement’ with ‘renewal’. What do you think?
I use the term retirement only in the absence of a more recognised term.
If you like the idea of renewal, how would you choose to renew?
Regardless of our age, the next 5, 10, 20 years are not going to be the same as the last 5, 10 or 20 years, for a range of reasons. One good reason for this is that we have more options for the way we choose to work and live.
Navigating change
Just as you focus on the financial planning, it is important to develop a plan for how you will navigate the changes involved and thrive in the years ahead.
